Belgian railway stamps cut in half
Every collector must have run into them at fairs in or in the back of a stock book... Sometimes highly priced, but are they worth it?
Not all halvings that you come across are hackworks, the halved railway stamps have really been used postally.
With a 1939 (September 2) order, each halved stamp might in the meantime be used to stamp the soldiers’ packages (Colis du Soldat). Only 3 instead of 6 Belgian francs had to be paid for this. That value, hoewever, did not exist on railway or package stamps.
A halved five Belgian francs stamp, as mentioned in some older catalogues (Michel, etc.) did never exist.
A few letter bits are always advisable in a collection “Belgium” or “railway stamps”, preferably on a complete document. 5 euro is an acceptable price for a complete document, a few euro for a letter fragment.
There are horizontal and vertical halvings. Diagonal ones seem to be less easy (or almost not) to be found.
